The Programme

The Camp for Climate Action will bring together lots of people to explore grassroots solutions to climate change. It will be a place that encourages discussion on what we are faced with, what the alternatives are, how we can achieve them and the diversity of tactics and action we will need to get there.

This timetable is subject to changes - please check the up-to-date timetable at the info-point (at the Climate Camp). There will be entertainment most evenings - this has not been added to the timetable yet. Also not included in the time table: 2-Day Rebel Clown Training, and Bike workshops with Bicycology: free bike workshops and basic maintenance, pedal-powered soundsystem, Bicycology Micro-Cinema, creative bike beautification, intro to 12 volt soundsystems, intro to renewable energy, and workshops on bike politics and culture.

Glossary of Climate Camp Terms:

Power down: every evening at around 11 (later on Saturdays) the soundsystems will be turned off and everyone will be asked to keep noise levels low, especially around areas where people are sleeping. This allows the camp to be a welcoming place for everyone including children, their parents, and people who want to get up early in the morning! There will be a chill-out area where people who want to stay up late and keep socializing can do so.

Set-up: the practical work of setting up the site, including putting up marquees, building compost toilets, setting up kitchens.

Take down: taking down the structures, cleaning up, recycling, and putting the site back to the state in which we originally found it.

The Climate Camp has no leaders and is run entirely by volunteers, it's about jointly creating the camp together, so we hope that everyone who comes will help with set-up, take-down, and all the tasks that will be needed to keep the camp running on a day-to-day basis.

Workshops and Activities Working Group

Descriptions of workshops

The programme is divided into ten sections. A few workshops are listed in more than one section. The evening entertainments (music, films, comedy) have not yet been added to the table.

Section 1 - Climate change science

Number Title Description
Peak Oil and Energy Descent Introduction to the deeply worrying concept of Peak Oil (that we have used up half the oil on the planet, and that the second half of it is harder to get at) and our societies' addiction to oil. Followed by a discussion on Low Energy Living and how to educate society
number Six Degrees: Global Warming Impacts over the coming century Scientists predict between one and six degrees of global warming by 2100. What will each degree of change look like? This workshop tries to answer the question using the latest evidence. Presented by Mark Lynas, whose book on this subject comes out early next year, this promises to be a sobering workshop. Plenty of opportunity for questions and comments.
number Bellamy's Bullshit: Debunking the Climate Myths This workshop will: identify some of the common myths about climate change science spread by the fossil fuel lobby and others give participants the information to debunk them identify climate sceptic organisations and individuals
number The science of climate change This workshop aims to give people a grasp of the fundamentals of climate science so they can engage in debate about the seriousness of the issue in an informed way. No science background is required.
number Advanced Climate Science This workshop aims to give a little more sophisticated grasp of the Climate system including discussion on the use of climate models and the problems of uncertainty in future climate scenario prediction. As such it is most suited for people who have a background in climate science, either through their work or through extensive reading.
number Climate science for Kids This fun and interactive workshop will give kids a grasp of what the greenhouse effect is and the problems that climate change will cause.
number Peat, Climate Change and the Camp for Climate Action The ecology of peat bogs, their role as massive global carbon sinks, the peat industry and how it releases carbon and peat industry related venues in and around Megawatt valley. Plus a brief summary of the campaign against the peat industry in that area.
number Climate Science for Beginners An interactive (and fun!) workshop giving a basic introduction to the science of climate change. It will explain in simple terms all the common jargon, key environmental processes and main impacts so that participants will be able to explain it to others.
number Aviation and Climate Change- The Science and Economics If you want to know the ins and outs of the arguments surrounding aviation and climate change, then this workshop is the quickest way to get that information. Theoretical and practical for use in campaigns against airport expansion and short haul flights.
98 Tipping Point- the race against climate change The process of climate change is unfolding much faster than previously thought. A number of ecosystem ‘tipping points’ hold in the balance, not only the future of human civilization, but of life on earth. Running alongside ecological breakdown is another much slower growth curve, that of human awareness and action. Will we reach the ‘tipping point’ of consciousness change and take worldwide collaborative, restorative action? Or will we cross an ultimate biospheric ‘tipping point’, thereby sealing our fate?
127 Population growth- contributor to climate change Two hundred years ago the Reverend Thomas Malthus warned that population growth would outstrip food supplies. In the 1960s books like “The Population Bomb” popularised the concept. There are now 6.5 billion humans on the planet. What impact is that having on climate change. A facilitated discussion with a a look at the West's consumption patterns as well as population growth in the Majority World.

Section 2: who are the climate criminals?

14 The Struggle for Iraq's Oil A presentation from people who work for “Corporate Watch” on the importance of Iraq's oil- the plans by the corporations to grab and burn it. Naming names and showing where the profits are going, this workshop will show who benefits from the chaos in Iraq.
15 What’s wrong with corporate social responsibility? Is BP going to save us from Climate Change? Is Unilever going to give us a sustainable food system? Is Corporate Social Responsibility a total contradiction in terms? If you work in CSR or believe that we should be spending our energy engaging with companies, you are strongly encouraged to attend this facilitated discussion with a Corporate Watch researcher.
16 Nuclear Power and Nuclear Weapons Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament will run this workshops, looking at the links between nuclear power and nuclear weapons proliferation in a global context. Nuclear power cannot be considered to be the answer to climate change - any solution must be a global solution. Otherwise, western hypocrisy surrounding nuclear technology will lead to more conflict and war.
17 Coal mining and indigenous resistance in the North West of Venezuela This workshop will tell of indigenous people's resistance to open-cast coal mining in Venezuela, and the destruction of primary tropical forests and eco-systems, and inevitable human rights abuses. It then broadens the issues to look at behaviour of coal mining companies and effects of operations across the world. It concludes with a look at resistance movements and ways to support international resistance.
18 Nuclear Industry and Climate Change The nuclear industry has recently reinvented itself as the solution to climate change with surprising support from environmentalists. This has invigorated a dying industry and much government action on climate change is centred around building new power plants. This workshop looks at the trends towards Nuclear's second wind and the connections with the climate debate.
19 No Widening the M1 Update on the M1 campaign so far and planning new strategies and action for taking it forward. For further information contact info[at]nowideningm1.org.uk
20 Building a coalition against expansion of Manchester Airport The workshop will discuss the recently announced expansion plans of Manchester Airport within a context of campaigning about aviation because of climate change. Re-starting/building a coalition to work across closely networked campaign groups in Manchester to fight expansion of Manchester Airport in all ways possible. Raising awareness, planning, networking, mobilising for a hard-hitting, well publicised, political, awareness raising, direct action campaign to put a spanner in the works!
21r Peat, Climate Change and the Camp for Climate Action The ecology of peat bogs, their role as massive global carbon sinks, the peat industry and how it releases carbon and peat industry related venues in and around Megawatt valley. Plus a brief summary of the campaign against the peat industry in that area.
22 Introduction to the M74 extension The M74 Extension is 5 miles of elevated urban motorway planned for the south of Glasgow. It's expensive (£500M+), unpopular, undemocratically introduced and offers much scope for action. The workshop will introduce the scheme, the social and environmental issues, and the people responsible. Followed by a discussion of ways to fight it.
23 Drax, coal and the national grid Drax, coal and the national grid
24 Which Banks fuel Oil & Climate Chaos? Which High Street Banks are fuelling oil & gas exploration and thus accelerating climate chaos? While claiming to be doing their bit against climate change, private banks are driving fossil fuel production. How can we stop them, through campaigns and direct action?
25 Pumping Poverty & Remember Saro-WiwaDescription How can we use 'memory' as an activist and political tool in our fight against climate change? Film of "Refining Memory" about Ken Saro-Wiwa and the Living Memorial. Followed by presentation & discussion on the impact of oil (militarisation, poverty, pollution...) on the Niger Delta and the Remember Saro-Wiwa project.
26 Saving the Ancient Forests This workshop will convey information about greenhouse gas emissions from tropical deforestation and peat destruction. The causes of the destruction and possible international solutions (looking at the link with climate change negotiations, the timber trade and the biofuel market). It will conclude with a discussion: what can and should we do as climate change activists?
28 Aviation and Climate Change- The Science and Economics If you want to know the ins and outs of the arguments surrounding aviation and climate change, then this workshop is the quickest way to get that information. Theoretical and practical for use in campaigns against airport expansion and short haul flights.
29 Art Not Oil Art Not Oil hopes to undermine oil companies' Greenwash by getting them kicked out of galleries, theatres and museums. It also hopes to support and stimulate creative movements for climate justice by acting as a beacon for politically and climatically- conscious art from all over the world. How can we (London Rising Tide and friends) keep reinvigorating this project as it heads towards its fourth year?

Section 3: Grassroots solutions: local, regional, and international.

41 Permaculture: solutions for a world in turmoil Permaculture isn't just organic allotments! This workshop, run by Andy Goldring of the Permaculture Association, will explain the concepts for everyone, and takes in also peak oil, climate change, bio-diversity, self-reliance, autonomy, traditional wisdom, food security, land use, forestry, sustainable housing.
42 The Union Forever, defending our... carbon emissions? What can people in unions do about “Greening the Workplace?” What are the pressure points? What help is available from the TUC, the government? There are dangers and opportunity costs. We hope that anyone who is a union steward will come to this workshop, and network for future action..
43 Renewable energy on site A guided tour of renewable energy installations on site and explanations of how they work. Does was it says on the tin!
44 Renewable Energy in the UK The workshop will cover the current situation in the UK regarding renewable energy, especially electricity generation e.g wind, sun, biomass. It will focus on the UK grid, government policy and economics. Also discusses what we can do at home, e.g. Change supplier or install alt-tech.
45 Biodiesel- making it and why it is not 'the solution' A practical introduction to making bio-diesel and we hope maybe including a demonstration! There will be ample opportunity for questions, and discussion about biofuels' problems- use of land and other problems with internal combustion engines and road transport
46 Windpower for Children Wind power, making pinwheels, kites, paper aeroplanes, using model wind turbine, learning about wind power and what it has been used for in the past. Keywords: wind energy power education history science engineering efficiency industry agriculture renewable, decentralised energy, practical, theoretical, international, multi-faith, models, crafts, painting, flight,
47 Slowing Down is the fastest way to reduce Carbon emissions This workshop, run by the Slower Speeds Initiative (info[at]slower-speeds.org.uk) will report on research showing that a lower top speed limit will do more to reduce CO2 emissions from road transport than any other single measure and that a 20mph speed limit in urban areas is necessary to enable more walking and cycling.
48 Carbon Counting: Ecological footprints and eco teams A team of people in treesponsibility is in process of developing this workshop
49 Introduction to Treesponsibility Activists from the highly successful Treesponsibility will explain their work, which uses reforestation as a tool for climate awareness. The focus will be practical- sharing our experience of obtaining land for planting, raising resources and running plantings with volunteers, and using this work as a platform for social change
50 Sustainable development- tools towards a sustainable society This workshop will give a brief overview of the implications of climate change in the next century, an outline of what sustainable development is & how it fits into national and international initiatives. It will also outline the 10Rs of a sustainable society (the 3Rs are only short term solution!. The workshop would then use the ‘safe space’ non-violent communication tool to empower workshop participants to choose what elements of the subject they wish to discuss further.
51 How to count and cut your carbon and why it's important After you've been to this workshop, you'll know the answers to the following questions; How much we've got to cut by when - and why - and what that means to you? How can I do my own carbon audit?
52 Food without Oil The corporate-controlled food system is heavily dependent on fossil fuels, and this makes it one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions (20% of emissions) in the UK. That needs to change fast! This workshop aims to provoke debate and most importantly action to challenge the corporate model of high-energy-dependent food production and distribution and to replace it with smaller scale, localised, environmentally sensitive food production and distribution methods.
53 How changing your eating habits can reduce greenhouse emissions A University of Chicago study comparing a typical US meat-based diet with a vegan diet. The 'typical' US diet generates the equivalent of nearly 1.5tonnes more carbon dioxide per year than a vegan diet. The authors of the study concluded that it would more environmentally effective to go vegan than to switch to a petrol electric hybrid car.
54 Decentralising Power Greenpeace will be running this workshop, which consists of a short film about Decentralised Energy, followed by a discussion about alternatives to our current centralised system and how we might create energy revolutions in our local communities.
55 Getting down & dirty with the compost This workshop will answer the following practical questions; Why compost?! Community involvement & how to create a sense of ownership of the project. Where to get resources, what you have to do to be a legal community composter. It will then look at the buffering effects of climate change on soils and how we can lock up carbon by composting.
56 Taking your Local development Plan to the cleaners Most local planning departments in the country are having their local planning laws rewritten; these will be in place for the next twenty years or so, and unless they are examined carefully are likely to deliver more development and greenhouse gases. They are obliged to be open for comment to all, so we can all join in and improve them. The process can be daunting. We are two liberal (not liberal democrat) district councillors whose local plan has been one of the first in the country to submit. (Ryedale). We have taken our plan all the way through to inspection on sustainability grounds,(only the third inspection in the country so far) and are willing to share our approach, although we have not yet had the judgement. If all local plans were to get attacked on sustainability grounds, it would have a very strong effect nationally.
57 Power from the deserts The talk will describe the proposal, which has been very thoroughly investigated by professional engineers, that Europe, the Middle East and North Africa may derive inexpensive, pollution-free power from the truly monumental quantities of energy that fall as sunlight on the world's hot deserts.
58 Composting The workshop focuses on the process of composting. Looking at why it is important in the context of climate change, how one can get started, what to compost, trouble-shooting etc.
59 Can ethical consumerism save the planet? More people than ever before are taking the good of the planet into account when making their shopping choices. But with big business and supermarket giants getting in on the ‘ethical’ act, can ethical consumerism sort out climate change or is it a dangerous diversion from the real battle ahead? This workshop will be run by New Internationalist magazine.
60 Contraction and Convergence Contraction and Convergence is a phrase we will hear more and more in the coming years. This workshop explains the elegant idea in simple terms. C and C is the Carbon Dioxide Emissions Control Framework being promoted for adoption by the United Nations. A global proposal for the reduction in Carbon Dioxide Emissions from a prescribed cap to climate-safe trough (Contraction); dividing Carbon Dioxide Emissions Rights between developed and developing countries to eventually reach equity (Convergence).
61 Carbon Rationing Action Groups- What? Why? How? What is carbon rationing? Why do it? What is a CRAG? Why do it in groups? How does a CRAG work? Who's already doing it? How can I get involved?
62 City Harvests- eat away... at those food miles Come to this workshop and discover the myriad options available in becoming a sustainable food grower and forager in the city:from community gardens and guerilla gardening, liberating "trash" from skips to harvesting fruits from abandoned trees. Feel empowered by the possibility of increasing your self-reliance and turn the need of sourcing local food into a reality. Reduce waste by incorporating it into your garden in terms of compost and structural additions. Come along to share ideas!
63 Green parenting It's not just nappies! What are the dilemmas of trying to raise a child environmentally. An opportunity for parents to discuss and network about the difficulties and the solutions.
64 Focus on your blind spots- what personal choices will make a difference? Step into the confessional box! What eco-sins blemish your conscience? Out of season fruit? A long-haul flight with no genuinely compelling reason. An uninsulated house? You've come to the camp, and can't pretend you don't know what you should do. It's just doing it,and moving on without being smug or competitively ascetic.
65 Decentralised self-organised eco-communities A discussion of autarky and self-sufficiency. What size is ideal for a bio-regional community? How would it run its economy, its politics? What examples already exist that could be used for inspiration and ideas?
66 How to help people enjoy choosing to fly/drive/consume less If you have friends or family completely seduced by consumerism, this workshop is for you! You will learn a way of communicating with people so that they get to say what they love about being able to fly to places, what needs it meets. Then it is possible to work on meeting these needs in ways that are less costly to the planet.
67 Bike it- you'll like it Bike It Schools Officers will be running the interactive workshop (we will be getting everyone to come up with action plans to get cycling going at their local schools)". How do deal with local authorities, get funding and show parents and teachers that it can be done!
68 Carbon Neutral Building for the Future Housing, and construction generally, is a huge contributor to carbon dioxide emissions. With the government proposing to cover the greenbelt in new houses, we need to know what the alternatives are. This workshop will explain the ins and outs of building low-carbon housing for the future health of the planet. It's suitable for absolute beginners and those more experienced.

50 Our last chance to prevent Climate Catastrophe This talk, by Mayer Hillman, will give outline what mess we are in and how and why we got here. It will outline the near total inadequacy of responses by every institution, and the fallacious assumptions behind current decision-making. It will then turn to the one and only blueprint that can now slow down the rate of climate change significantly (Contraction and Convergence)
Gaia Theory, Climate Change and Permaculture This workshop will take a look at both James Lovelock's notion of the Earth as a self-regulating system and Permaculture (permanent agriculture). Aimed at everyone, from absolute beginners to the experienced, it will explain the science behind climate change, and get people thinking about solutions

Promising to be a controversial time, this will be a talk with lots of time for questions and debate. It's aimed at carnivores, vegetarians and vegans (i.e. Everyone!!)
52 Beyond Oil This workshop will tackle a range of questions; The end of the oil age – what BP and Shell do to local people to feed our oily habits – - how cheap is our energy? – peak oil production – Does less oil equal a more local life? Plan B is a campaign group working to end public funds spent on oil companies. Effective development aid must help reduce carbon emissions and support poor people, not wealthy corporations
53 Empowering Citizen Green: pre-figurative politics, autonomous spaces and hoping against hope The workshop will open up discussion on the politics of sustainability. We talk a lot about the alternative economics, the renewable energies and appropriate technologies of a sustainable society. But how will sustainable communities constitute themselves politically? Is reform of current institutions possible or does sustainability demand a radical earth democracy? How can we be the change we want to see in the world, now, today, in this instant? How can we counter the despair of exceeding ecological limits by creating autonomous spaces of hope against hope; spaces of resistance that may last a moment or a lifetime.
70 Climate Justice and Solidarity with Southern Movements and marginalised communities in the North Communities and movements in the South have been mobilising around issues related to climate change of action we take and the way in which we take it? Also in the North, communities are suffering impacts of marginalisation, social and environmental injustice. What movements exist in the North and how can we support and work with budding community struggles in our own localities.

121 Taking the long view Getting the bigger picture: an open discussion about different alternatives for how we can structure a carbon-neutral society
124 Why are there so few non-caucasian people in this movement? A guided discussion looking at this question. It would be easy to explain the problem away as “well, the police would pick on them in public order situations”, but the reality is probably more complex. What are the hidden barriers (of language, culture, dress etc) that keep us as white as we largely are?
Climate Justice- what does it mean? A brief introduction outlining existing ideas about Climate Justice (Durban Declaration, Bali and Contraction and Convergence) before moving to into a facilitated discussion about the implications of Climate Justice for activists in the UK. How do we show practical solidarity with the rest of the world?

Section 4: technocratic 'solutions'

An opportunity for those involved in both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary politics to share viewpoints and experiences. Also a look at the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Climate Change, led by Colin Challen
Introduction to the Kyoto Protocol and Carbon Markets The Kyoto Protocol is the international agreement aimed at tackling climate change. Although it proved a landmark treaty with targets to reduce emissions agreed to by most countries, there are major loopholes that undermine its achievements. These loopholes come in the form of the Flexible Mechanisms that now provide the foundation for a global carbon market. This workshop will examine the Kyoto Protocol's development and plot the course through which the carbon market came into being. It will also equip people with a basic knowledge of the workings of the market and the threats it presents to climate justice.
Climate Change and Biofuels The use of bio-fuels in becoming increasingly discussed as an ideal alternative to petrol for transport. Recently the EU passed a directive that bio-fuels should make up 5.75% of what's on the market by 2010. However there are serious questions to be asked about the use of bio-fuels. One is that competition between land for food and land for fuel will explode. In countries such as Brazil these issues are at the forefront of landless peoples' struggles where ethanol production is exacerbating existing land rights injustices. This workshop will cover the basics of bio-fuels and explore some of the debates this climate change 'solution' is igniting.
Introduction to Carbon Offsets and the alternatives Carbon offsets have been making a strong appearance in climate change debate lately. People can now pay a small fee to an independent company to supposedly live a 'CarbonNeutral'© lifestyle. Increasingly these schemes are being used by corporations such as British Airways and BP as PR tools in their battle with criticism over their impact on the environment. This workshop will introduce you to fundamental problems with carbon offsets and why they will never be a solution to climate change as well as cover some of the existing alternatives.
Free Market Environmentalism and Climate Change The free market has made a steady and successful infiltration into the climate policy-making world since the international UN talks on the issue began. With the advent of the carbon market we now see a historic proliferation of the neo-liberal ideology into the realm of environmental decision-making. What does this spell for other environmental problems as the US, Australia and the UK all experiment with trading schemes in issues from water pollution to endangered? And how do activists join the economic and environmental dots when it comes to linking climate change with other social injustices.
Business Models 2006-2100 It is unlikely that markets will ever disappear when it comes to trade and interaction between people for goods and services. We are facing a massive change in the future once cheap energy makes the current model unworkable. What will replace it? This workshop run as a presentation followed by exercises. Participants will be invited to put forward their visions of business models in 2020, 2050, and 2080.
69 Biofuels: A Blessing or an environmental catastrophe What are the pitfalls of biofuels? Can they be sustainable? How can individuals campaign against unsustainable growth of biofuels? This workshop is aimed at everyone, and will be a talk followed by question and answer.

It's to show we can be creative humans without leaving giant ecological footprints.
102 Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Unfortunately sometimes activists get psychologically traumatised during actions, often because of police violence. As a movement we need to support these people, and help them to help themselves. What do we think here today - how does our experience stack up against the theory - how and why did we get involved? As activists, what strategies have you and your groups tried to build your networks/local groups? Based on all this, what do we think about our movement's current movement-building strategies? Do they work? How do they work? Which work best? Are there problems with them? How could they work better? Even if you don't have any answers to any of these questions, come listen to what other people think, and say if you agree or not!!
